Safety tips for driving at night

Driving at night can be tricky. When the sun sets, drivers are faced with a whole new set of on-the-road challenges, like reduced visibility, glare from oncoming traffic, and more.

4 steps to safe night driving

1. Dim your interior lights

As much as your interior lights help you to see inside your vehicle in the dark, they can hinder your abilities to see what’s going on in front of you on the road.

Dashboard lights and infotainment systems can be a source of distraction that can reduce your vision, so dim your interior dash and infotainment lights at night so you can keep your eyes on what’s most important—the road.

2. Align your headlights

You know that your car’s headlights are vital for nighttime driving, but did you know that it’s just as important to make sure they’re properly aligned?

Even in brand new cars, headlights are sometimes uneven, or pointed lower than they should be. Take a few minutes to align your headlights according to the manufacturer’s instructions, so you can see and be seen.

3. Watch for animals

Scampering squirrels and hopping bunnies are a sweet sight to behold in the daytime, but when visibility is decreased at night, scurrying animals can become a serious road hazard—especially when those animals are as large as a deer or a moose.

Make a habit of watching for the bright illuminated eyes of animals, especially if you’re driving on rural roads. To protect you and animals, slow down and drive cautiously when you’re near forested areas. Reducing your speed gives you more time to react, so you can avoid veering off the road and over correcting.

4. Keep your windshield clean

Even if your windshield appears clean in the daytime, unseen streaks can appear at night, causing glare and diminishing your vision. Clean your windshield regularly—inside and out!
