Program

How do medals work?

Medals are a great way to challenge yourself to be a better driver! Each medal has 6 levels of difficulty, so you can improve your driving behaviour at your own pace.

When you earn a medal, simply tap it to claim it.

How is my score calculated?

Your score is updated after each day of driving. It's based on a general picture of your driving behaviour and habits. So one-off events won't have a direct impact on your score.

Just like grades in school, you want to aim for a score over 60. Past data from the Ajusto program shows that most of our clients had scores of 76 or more. That works out to about 10% off your premium.

What is a "driving period" in Ajusto?

The driving period is a 6-month reference period we use to calculate your personalized premium. The trips you make during this period impact your score.

How does my driving affect my score and my personalized premium?

Ajusto analyzes your driving data and calculates your score, based on:

Your driving behaviour

Distractions
Cellphone use while driving is one of the leading causes of collisions. If you stay off your phone when driving, you’ll improve your score and help make the roads safer.

Acceleration
Avoiding fast acceleration helps reduce the risk of a collision. You'll improve your score by pulling away from stops gently.

Braking
By keeping a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front, you'll have enough time to brake in an emergency and avoid a collision. Smooth braking will improve your score.

Speed
Respecting the speed limit decreases the risk of a collision and helps improve road safety. That being said, the parameters of the app have been set to allow a small margin over the legal speed limit (between 10 and 15 km/h depending on the limit), without compromising the safety values we want to promote. To maximize your score, drive at a safe speed.

Your driving habits

Time of day travelled
The risk of an accident is higher at certain times. That's why Ajusto associates a level of risk with different times of day. For example, driving at night is considered riskier than driving during the day due to driver fatigue and reduced visibility in the dark.

Distance travelled
The less you drive, the more you save. Shorter trips pay off because they increase your score.

Routine trips
If you take the same routes all the time, you're less likely to encounter surprises and have an accident. The more regular your daily routine, the higher your score will be.

If someone else drives my vehicle, will this impact my score?

No. Your score isn't affected when someone else drives your car.

If you weren't driving, but were a passenger, and the app didn't detect it, simply indicate it in the app for the trip in question. Please note that you have 30 days to make this change, after which the trip is archived.

Will I be penalized if I brake suddenly to avoid an accident?

It depends. We know that there are times when you need to accelerate fast to let an ambulance through or to brake hard to avoid a collision. That's why your score isn't based on one-off events. Instead it's calculated on your driving profile as a whole.

If this type of event happens, you can delete trips from the app that don't reflect your good driving habits.

Can I delete trips that don't reflect my good driving habits?

Yes. In the list of trips, select the trip you want to remove and delete it.

Note that the number of trips available for you to delete varies. When you sign up for Ajusto, you get 2 trips to delete. Once a month, you may get more trips to delete based on how many kilometres you drove. The app displays how many trips are available for you to delete at all times.

What happens if I don't drive for more than 30 days?

If you don't drive for more than 30 consecutive days, you might not receive a personalized premium, either after your first 6 months (180 days) in the program or at your insurance renewal. To establish an accurate picture of your driving habits and behaviours, you need to make regular trips during the driving period.

What happens after my first 6 months in the program?

When you activate Ajusto in the app, you get a 10% sign-up discount on your auto insurance premium for your first 6 months (180 days).

This initial driving period corresponds to 180 days and at least 1,000 km of driving. It gives us a good picture of your driving behaviour and habits and helps calculate your score. After the initial driving period, we use your score to offer you a personalized premium that corresponds more closely to your actual driving. Your personalized premium replaces the 10% sign-up discount. When you renew your car insurance, your personalized premium is updated.

Safe driving could help lower your premium by as much as 25%. However, riskier driving could increase your premium by up to 20%.

Good to know: nearly 90% of our clients signed up for Ajusto have reduced or maintained their car insurance premium.1

What are my responsibilities as an Ajusto user?

As an Ajusto user, you must ensure your phone is on and its battery is charged when you're driving so the application can collect data. If the battery is too low, no data will be collected.

You must let the app always use your phone's location so Ajusto can detect trips and gather information.

For each trip, you must also indicate whether you're driving. This way, Ajusto calculates a score for just the trips when you're driving. You have 30 days to select your means of transportation for each trip. After 30 days, trips are archived and cannot be changed.

Can my insurance premium go up as a result of the Ajusto program?

Yes, but by driving safely, you could see a premium reduction of up to 25%. Riskier driving could mean a premium increase of up to 20%.

Good to know: nearly 90% of our clients signed up for Ajusto have reduced or maintained their car insurance premium.1

When you renew your auto insurance policy, your premium also takes into account traditional factors like your age, gender, vehicle model and year, driving convictions and claims.

If you become ineligible or we are required to end your participation in the program, you are no longer eligible to receive any sign-up discount or favourable program adjustment; however, any unfavourable program adjustment continues to apply.

Sign-up discount and personalized premium

When will I get my 10% sign-up discount?

As soon as you activate Ajusto and accept the terms and conditions in The Personal app, we apply the 10% sign-up discount to your car insurance policy for your first 6 months (180 days) in the program.

How is my premium personalized and when will I start seeing a difference?

After driving for 6 months:

  • Your 10% sign-up discount is replaced by a personalized premium based on your driving.
  • Your score is used to adjust your original auto insurance premium (before you signed up for Ajusto).

At renewal:

  • 55 to 90 days before your policy expires, we prep your renewal.
  • We consider your score then to calculate your new insurance premium.
  • Your score is based on your driving during the 6 months before we prep your renewal.

For your score to impact your premium, you must drive at least 1,000 km during each driving period.

What is the difference between a traditional premium and the Ajusto personalized premium?

Traditional insurance premiums are calculated based on several factors like age, gender, vehicle model and year, driving convictions and claims.

With Ajusto, we added a new "safe driving" factor. As you drive, you get a score that is used to personalize your insurance premium. So by driving safely, you could get a premium reduction of up to 25%. Whereas riskier driving could mean a premium increase of up to 20%.

Good to know: nearly 90% of our clients signed up for Ajusto have reduced or maintained their car insurance premium.1

What coverages do the Ajusto program sign-up discount and personalized premium apply to?

The Ajusto program sign-up discount and personalized premium apply to all main vehicle coverages and the following endorsements:

  • Ontario policy change form (OPCF) 5 – Permission to Rent or Lease Automobiles and Extending Coverage to the Specified Lessee(s)
  • OPCF 13C – Restricting Glass Coverage
  • OPCF 16  – Suspension of Coverage
  • OPCF 38 – Agreed Limit for Automobile Electronic Accessories and Equipment
  • OPCF 48 – Added Coverage to Offset Tort Deductibles
  • 5 Year New Vehicle Protection

How does Ajusto impact my insurance payments?

If you pay your premium in a single payment and your score is favourable, you get a refund of up to 25% on your premium. If your score is unfavourable, you need to make an additional payment of up to 20%.

If you pay your premium in several payments, the amount of adjustment to your premium is spread over your next payments.

Enrollment

Who can sign up for the Ajusto program?

To sign up for Ajusto, you must have auto insurance with us or be the principal driver of a vehicle insured with us and have an iPhone or Android smartphone.

Occasional drivers (like teenagers who use your car) can't sign up for Ajusto.

How much does it cost to sign up for the Ajusto program?

Ajusto is an optional program that's completely free.

Can I opt out when I want?

You can opt out of the Ajusto program at any time. In the app, go to Profile. Under Account management, select Settings, Ajusto, and then Stop using Ajusto. Ajusto then stops recording your trips. We'll update your auto insurance policy and send you a confirmation by email.

If you just delete the app from your phone, you are still signed up for the Ajusto program. To opt out, you must select Stop using Ajusto.

If you opt out of the program before 6 months (180 days) have passed:

  • You lose your 10% sign-up discount.

If you opt out of the program after 6 months (180 days) have passed:

  • If your score is above 60, we remove your favourable adjustment from your premium.
  • If your score is below 60, we keep your unfavourable adjustment on your premium. At any time, you are encouraged to sign up again in the program and start a new trip analysis period to try to improve your driving. However, you don't receive the 10% sign-up discount and the previously applied score remains. When you complete it, we update your premium using your new score.

What type of smartphone do I need?

To sign up for the Ajusto program, you need an iPhone or Android phone.

Your smartphone must have a GPS, an accelerometer and a gyroscope. This is why Huawei phones are not compatible.

Also note that Ajusto is not compatible with tablets.

Do I need a data plan?

No, you don't need a data plan. But you need to have regular access to a Wi-Fi network so that Ajusto can send your driving data.

Do I need to be insured with you to sign up for Ajusto?

If you have auto insurance with us, you can sign up for Ajusto. You'll get a 10% sign-up discount on your insurance for your first 6 months (180 days) in the program.

After that, we personalize your premium based on your driving behaviour and habits. Each time you renew, we update your premium based on your driving.

App

Why do I need to accept the location permission request?

After downloading the app and activating Ajusto, your phone's operating system (iOS or Android) sends a request to use your location. You need to allow location services and select Always so that Ajusto can operate properly.

The app uses your location to collect driving data and calculate your score, which we need to offer you a personalized premium based on your driving.

What does the app count as a cellphone distraction?

The app records a distraction when anyone uses your phone while the vehicle is moving. Your score isn’t affected if you have your phone mounted on a holder so that you can use the GPS, make hands-free calls or use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Can I delete the app from my phone?

If you want to continue using Ajusto, you must keep the app installed on your phone. Note that just deleting the app on your phone doesn’t cancel your Ajusto enrollment.

What should I do if I get a new phone?

Download the app onto your new phone and log in to your account with your email or cellphone number. All your information will still be in the app.

How does the app know whether I'm a driver or a passenger?

The app uses a predictive model to determine if you're driving. It's also how we determine what mode of transportation you're using. But if it turns out you weren't the driver or you used a different mode of transportation than the one detected, you can easily change your trip information in the app. Please note that you have 30 days to make this change, after which the trip is archived.

Why can't I download The Personal app in the App Store or Google Play?

It's probably because the app isn't compatible with your smartphone model or your phone's operating system. The app is compatible with Apple iOS and Google Android. Since the app is Canadian, your phone's operating system must also be set to Canada.

Note that Huawei phones are not compatible.

Does Ajusto use my phone's battery?

Yes. All apps use some battery power. The effect varies from one phone model to another, but battery consumption is highest when the app uses GPS. If your phone's charge is too low, Ajusto doesn’t start up or stops collecting data if you're driving, as we don't want to drain your phone's battery recording trips.

Remember to make sure your phone is switched on and the battery is charged so that trip data can be collected.

I told the agent I want to sign up for Ajusto. What happens next?

You need to download The Personal app. To do so, you can go to the App Store® or Google PlayTM, or use the link we sent you by text or email. Once you have the app, you can sign up in the Prevention section.

Why can’t I activate the Ajusto section of The Personal app?

This is probably because your phone does not have the right functions to use Ajusto: a GPS, an accelerometer and a gyroscope. This is why Huawei phones are not compatible.

If your phone has all these functions and you still can't activate Ajusto, please contact us and we'll be happy to help.

Note that Ajusto is not compatible with tablets.

Data

Is my data continuously collected?

Data is only collected when Ajusto detects that you’re in a moving vehicle.

All trips are saved and then analyzed. This means there's a short delay before the data is available. Depending on your Wi-Fi selection in your account settings, the data is uploaded at the end of the trip or when you enter a Wi-Fi zone.

What data is collected?

When Ajusto is activated, it records:

  • Smartphone location (GPS)
  • Accelerometer data (which measures accelerations)
  • Gyroscope data (which measures rotational movements)
  • Time of day
  • Battery level
  • Anomalies (such as turning off the phone or revoking access to geolocation)

Privacy

How is the collected data not used?

The collected data is not used to cancel your policy, or to refuse to renew your policy. We do not sell or communicate the collected data to any third party except if required by law.

Do you share my data?

We take our clients' privacy very seriously. We're committed to protecting your privacy, and we understand that you may have concerns about how we use the collected data.

If we need to transfer your personal information to a third party such as our service provider, Cambridge Mobile Telematics Inc., they're contractually required to protect and handle your personal information. This transfer is consistent with our privacy safeguarding measures.

Your personal information is completely confidential. It is not disclosed to any additional third parties, except where required by law.

For more information, see section 3, "Privacy," of the Ajusto Program Terms and Conditions. You can also find information in our Management and Protection of Personal Information Policy for mobile application users.

If you have further privacy questions, including any questions about the transfer of your personal information outside of Canada, or if you require written information about our use of service providers outside of Canada, please contact us.

What data is shared and with whom?

The Ajusto section of the app only collects your name, date of birth, email address and driving data. This information is used by Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), our partner for the Ajusto program, to provide usage-based insurance services. CMT does not otherwise use personal information, or disclose or transfer personal information to any third party except if required by law.

The identifying information is only used by us to link the data received by CMT to the enrolled driver(s) and vehicle(s) on the insurance policy.

When do previous Ajusto versions expire?

Older versions of Ajusto expire between November 16, 2024, and November 15, 2025. Before your renewal comes due in that period, we’ll contact you to explain your options if you have an Ajusto discount from an older version of the program.

What options do I have before the previous versions of Ajusto expire?

Option 1

You sign up for the new version of Ajusto before you renew. In this case, your current discount (or 10% if your current discount is lower) is maintained for 6 months (180 days) starting the day you sign up and accept the Ajusto Program Terms and Conditions. After the 6 months, your discount is replaced by an adjustment that's more closely tailored to your driving habits.

Option 2

You take no action: Your Ajusto discount is removed the next time you renew your car insurance policy.

What’s changed with Ajusto?

The latest version of Ajusto continuously assesses driving behaviour, rather than considering a one-time snapshot. This encourages drivers to maintain their good habits on an ongoing basis and get a personalized premium. To learn more, see the frequently asked questions about the program.

When can I sign up for the latest version of Ajusto?

You can sign up at any time. If you do so before renewing your car insurance, your current discount (or 10% if your current discount is lower) is applied to your premium for the first 6 months (180 days) starting the day you sign up and accept the Ajusto Program Terms and Conditions. If you join after renewing, you benefit from the usual 10% sign-up discount for 6 months.

How do I sign up for the latest version of Ajusto?

You can sign up for the program in the Desjardins Insurance Home-Auto app. Log in and activate Ajusto in the Prevention section. You can also contact us for help. In either case, it may take a few days to confirm your enrollment.

What happens if I don't have the Desjardins Insurance Home-Auto app or if I removed it?

You need to download the app from the App Store® or Google PlayTM and create an online account if you don’t already have one. Then sign up for Ajusto in the app to enjoy the latest version. You can also contact us for help.

Where can I find out how much my current Ajusto discount is?

If you got your current discount from a previous version of Ajusto, you can find it listed on pre-2023 car insurance documents, which are available 24/7 when you log in to Online Services.

What can I do to maintain a similar discount with the latest version of Ajusto?

Safe driving can help lower your premium by as much as 25%. However, riskier driving can increase your premium by up to 20%. Good to know: nearly 90% of our clients signed up for Ajusto have reduced or maintained their car insurance premium.1

The behaviours measured are distractions, acceleration, braking and speed. The program also considers your driving habits: the time of day and distance travelled as well as routine trips. To learn more, watch this video.

What’s the impact on my premium if I don’t sign up for the latest version of Ajusto?

If you don’t sign up for the latest version of Ajusto, the discount is removed the next time you renew your car insurance. To establish your premium, we also consider traditional factors like your gender, age, vehicle model and year, driving convictions and claims.
